For more than twenty years, Armand Guillaumin (1841–1927), Paul Cezanne (1839–1906) and Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) counted one another as among the closest of friends. They served as one another’s artistic collaborator, guide, and mentor. Their friendship was also personal. While much scholarship has been devoted to the artistic relationship between the Pissarro and Cezanne, none has included Guillaumin as anything more than a footnote in their dialogue.
The exhibition Among Friends, will feature a selection of paintings drawn primarily from the collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Two significant loans from private collections of paintings by Armand Guillaumin, one marking its American debut in this installation, will provide a unique opportunity to gain a more nuanced understanding of this artist alongside Cezanne and Pissarro, in an exhibition that highlights their creativity, exchange, and friendship.
