American Alliance of Museums Issues High Praise in Nelson-Atkins Reaccreditation

Museum recognized for leadership in community engagement, collections quality and stewardship

Kansas City, MO. – The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has been reaccredited by the American Alliance of Museums, an achievement held by only three percent of museums nationwide.

“The museum is an exemplary cultural institution for its community, and a model for the nation,” Lisa Tremper Hanover, chair of the AAM Accreditation Commission, said in the commission’s decision letter.

The AAM Accreditation Program ensures the integrity and accessibility of museum collections, reinforces museums’ educational and public service roles, and promotes good governance practices and ethical behavior. Reaccreditation is done every 10 years and includes an extensive self-evaluation and peer review of every aspect of museum operations.

While accreditation itself is a significant achievement, the Nelson-Atkins was praised by reviewers for its exemplary leadership in several key areas, including community engagement, stewardship of its collections, and strong leadership.

In their site visit report, reviewers said, “The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is a strong and evolving institution…It continues to contribute meaningfully to its communities and to the museum field, supported by effective leadership, sound governance, and a clear sense of purpose.”

The AAM is the only organization representing the entire museum field, from art and history museums to science centers and zoos. Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, just over 1,100 are accredited.
